GIDJ history
2003/until January 2006

We received(1st february 2006) that email from Dr.Peggy Cohen-Kettenis, PhD.

That is an important communication, we would like all GID Journal readers & colaborators could know as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Dear ms Torres,

Some people focused my attention on your GID Journal, stating in an editorial that our clinic is offering surgery at 16 years. This is not true.In the Netherlands we only allow people to get surgery after the age of 18 years. I therefore kindly request you to change that factual information.

Furthermore, the editorial may give the impression that what we do in The Netherlands is to give hormones to all adolescents who come to our clinic for SRS. Again, this is not true. A faily large percentage who apply for SR will be rejected, after long and careful clinical examination, consisting of face-to-face interviews with the patient, their parents, and extensive psychodiagnostic assessment.

I would greatly appreciate if you add a sentence warning potential readers of this editorial that not all adolescents qualify for sex reassignment. Many are just confused or have only mild gender problems.Especially because this is a vulnerable group of youngsters, one should be very cautious and try to prevent postoperative regret in any possible way. This is also my message in my publications you refer to.

Sincerely,

P.T. Cohen-Kettenis, Ph.D.
VU University Medical Center
Department of Medical Psychology
Amsterdam The Netherlands

Dear Dr.Cohen-Kettenis,

We never said you precribed SRS for all youths that went to your service. What we said was you understood as we understood, for some VERY WELL DIAGNOSED youths, after YEARS OF FOLLOW UP, they could start puberty delay and HRT sooner.

Some time ago, we exchanged emails and I read something you wrote, about SRS at 16. I agree with that way to treat GID transsexual youths, and we do this here... so we mentioned it.

I do not agree with your changing ideas about GID youths Dr.Cohen-Kettenis, but surely I respect your ways, your time and your conclusions. But the GID transsexual youths are suffering, and they need help as soon as possible.

In my country, all youths may vote with 16. I think they may decide too, if they are real girls or boys, and we hope we may help them, as soon as we can, AFTER A COMPLETE EVALUATION AFTER YEARS OF FOLLOW UP, OF THE PATIENT AND OF THE FAMILY, to help the suffering child to have peace of mind with the most complete possible harmony between body and mind.

Why wait more 2 years of sufferings? Because the local laws? What is more important, old laws based on old points of principles or to help children to have life and peace?!

Sincerely yours,

Dr.Torres,Ph.D.

Among GID experts, the old question between Nature & Nurture influence in gender identity formation, is still important today. Money, Zucker, Mazur & followers are always saying nurture is more important than nature, and gender identity is not a biologic derivative, but a rearing derivative, as something very plastic during life development. On the other side, Diamond, Reiner , Dorner and also Torres suggest we have enough evidence to say, nature is the essencial determination factor for gender identity formation.

That is a very important question FOR THE PATIENT`S POINT OF VIEW, because the Nurture team prescribe children may not be evaluated and corrected, because they have plastic or labile gender identities... so we would need to wait 18 years or more, to take the steps to transition, HRT and SRS.

On the contrary, if gender identity is not so plastic, then early diagnosis, treatment, HRT and transition would be performed for children and adolescents AS THE PATIENTS ASK FOR IT.

In GIDJ 3(2) 2005 edition, Dr.Torres show BOTH... NATURE & NURTURE are important in a complimentary way... NATURE DEFINES THE PROCESS.... and later NURTURE may help or disturb that process.

For Hermaphrodites and some Intersex, rearing therapies may help to define a gender polarization and stabilization, BECAUSE THE NATURE DETERMINES NOT GOOD POLARITY... BUT most of times Intersex and even some Hermaphrodites may have a natural gender polarity, and in those situations, nurture may disturb the stability of the system.

GID`s, mainly TS and CD`s are very polar, and need no external help to define inner natural polarity... the help they need is to correct their bodies, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (TS) and to live with their possible problems (CD`s).

TG`s or GIDNOS may be not so polar, and may need some external help sometimes.

The main conclusion is:

Some need some Nurture help... to polarize, BECAUSE THEIR PARTICULAR SITUATION may be a little bit gender identity plastic or labile (most hermaphrodites and some Intersex, for example, as PAIS intersex);
Some need Nurture help not to discover a gender polarity, but to live in harmony with that inner polarity, as TS and CD`s for example;
Some need special help as GIDNOS (TG) to live in a not so well polar way, for example.

Read the paper please! Nature is not all... but it surely is the main development stage. Nurture is also important, and may help the patient or disturb sometimes. Most of times, gender identity IS NOT PLASTIC (as David Reimer`s example), and we may diagnose children as soon as possible, and most of times for Transsexuals, that is really possible!

Aproveitem a oportunidade! É IMPERDÍVEL!!!!

We will receive to publish in the next edition, a paper from Dr.Turner, about transsexuality, homosexuality and genetics.

We will publish soon also, a paper from Prof.Italiano, about the possible relation between DAX-1, Klinefelter syndrome and transsexualism.

We received a letter and comment from Bhakti Ananda Goswami, about a work published by Dr.Willian Reiner,PhD.

As we personally believe Gender Identity is a very unstable nonlinear dynamical system during human gestation, we intend to continue publishing Dr.Torres papers about Gender Identity nonlinear uncertainties and Poincaré Chaos concepts... soon!!!

We have now, for GID Journal, our ISSN registration.
Our number is
ISSN 1806-0552

As we have not with sure a lot of papers to publish, it will continue as a quarterly journal, from 2004 on.

We would like to receive, to publish in our editions, articles about SRS surgeries, MtF and/or FtM.
Dr.Kim and Dr.Suporn could help us publishing Dr.Suporn MtF surgery, as Dr.Cury from Brazil published some time ago!!!
We invite also all other Thai SRS MtF surgeons, as Dr.Preecha, Dr.Kunaporn, Dr.Kamol.... please, send us your surgeries so we may know their details and discuss them.
Sensitivity, orgasm possibilities, depth of the neo-vagina, preservation or not of prostate, orchiectomization before SRS, poil elimination from the neo-vagina internal tissues, among other aspects need to be discussed and showed so all may develop new resources for the GID MtF transsexual patients.

The same we may say about FtM SRS.... about metoidioplasty....about tissue cloning for neo-phallus enlargement after metoidioplasty... about mastectomy, and other aspects.

We would like also to invite Brazilian surgeons too, as Dr. Luis Carlos Miranda from UFRJ in Rio de Janeiro, and Dr.Walter Kopf from Porto Alegre, among others, to show your surgeries.
Not only from Thailand and Brazil, but from all other countries... GID jornal is a free resource to spread new techniques.

We would like to invite all experts to debate details and results about SRS MtF and FtM surgeries, and related subjects as gender identity formation, gender identity stability....why not???

We received the confirmation from Dr.Sam Winter, Ph.D., he intend to join us in our GID Journal Ed Board.Thank you Dr.Winter!

We received also two other important letters... one from Dr.Suzana Herculano-Houzel,PhD, a very important Brazilian neurobiologist. She will write now a book, in Portuguese, about "The Adolescent Brain".... and she will talk to us to make contributions in all aspects of gender identity formation and GID.... probably for the first semester of 2004.

We received a letter from Dr.Kim,PhD from Dr.Suporn Clinic....soon she will send us papers and come to our Board... perhaps later, Dr.Suporn too.

See here the wonderful letter we received from Dr.Gunther Dörner, from Berlin, Germany:

Dear Dr. Torres:

Many thanks for your kind e-mail of October 23 and your invitation to be a Honorary Member of your GID Journal.
We both completely agree about the origin and development of gender identity, but not of all of sexual orientation. Therefore I would by you to turn down your friendly invitation. I think that the Bonobo ape is not a classical example for the explanation of human bi- and homosexuality. Nevertheless, I wish you all the best for your new Journal and your Gender Clinic.

I have still a question:
“Are you the author of “MEU SEXO REAL” and Martha C. Freitas was only your pen name?”

I was very sorry, that I could not find a publisher for a German edition of this excellent book, apart from a different explanation of sexual orientation.

With cordial regards

Sincerely yours,

Günter Dörner

That is a great honour for me, and for GID Journal, to receive that letter from Dr.Dörner.
As I said in my GID Journal november edition small paper, we may not agree in all subjects, but that will change not how I admire him as a predecessor, as the pioneer of the sex of the brain researching, when all authorities believed with Freud, that the brain had no gender differentiation, and someone could learn socially to be a boy or a girl.

Surely, Dr.Dörner is and will be the first Honorary Member of our gallery, where we intend to homage the researchers we believe were the big pioneers of our real knowlege about GID and related matters.

About sexual orientation we do not agree in all... but I have a great respect for his ideas, and GID will be forever open to publish any paper, comment or letter, Dr.Dörner send us to publish, even to say.... Torres, I do not agree with you.

We would like to extend that observation for all of you... the normal, for GID Journal, is not to have the same opinion... the normal is diversity...because we intend to flow to more and more knowledge about our human reality.... and to increase knowledge, we are sure, the human only way is the dialectic dynamic of different points of view and diversity of perceptions.

Thank you Dr.Gunther Dörner for your wonderful letter!

Even if you do not agree with us, you are a Honorary Member of GID Journal!

___________
